LIVER TRANSPLANT
A liver transplant is a procedure conducted to remove a diseased liver that no longer functions properly and replacing it with a healthy liver from a living or deceased donor. Liver is often the most important organ of the body and helps in performing several critical functions such as removing toxins from the blood, regulating immune responses, processing hormones and medications, secreting bile juice, etc. Liver transplant is generally considered an option for those who have significant complications or are having chances of chronic liver disorder.
Causes of Liver Failure:
Who Can Be Your Donor?
LIVING DONOR: In this surgical procedure, a portion of the liver from a healthy living person is removed and replaced in the donor patient with a liver that is no longer working properly. The liver is capable of re-growth to its normal size & capacity within a few month's time in both donor and recipient and so a portion of the liver works good enough to restore the normal liver function. A family member is a preferred donor provided positive test results.
DECEASED DONOR: In this surgical procedure, a transplant happens by taking the healthy liver from a deceased donor. It happens, when a patient does not have a family member to donate a liver. Liver of person who died due to accident or from brain dead patients are usually preferred.
What Is a Liver Transplant?
In a liver transplant surgery, the surgeon removes the diseased liver and replaces it with a healthy liver. It is used for tumors that cannot be completely removed due to the size or location of the tumors or because the liver is too diseased for regular surgery.
What Happens During Liver Transplant Surgery?
During transplant surgery, the transplant team replaces the diseased liver with a donated, healthy liver. The blood type and body size of the donor have to match the person receiving the transplant.
How long the surgery lasts and what is the recovery time?
Liver transplant surgery usually takes between 4 to 12 hours and patients stay in the hospital for up to 3 weeks after surgery.
What Are the Risks of a Liver Transplant?
Like all major surgery, this also has possible serious risks such as bleeding, infection, and complications from anesthesia. There might be side effects as well from the immunosuppressive drugs they need to take.
