Mitral Valve Repair And Replacement (MVR)

Mitral Valve Repair And Replacement (MVR)

Mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement are procedures that are performed to treat diseases of the mitral valve which is located between the left heart chambers that is the left atrium and left ventricle.

In mitral valve regurgitation, the flaps or leaflets of the mitral valve don't close tightly and thus causes blood to leak backward into the left atrium. This commonly occurs due to valve leaflets bulging back, a condition referred to as mitral valve prolapse. In another condition, called mitral valve stenosis, the leaflets become thick or stiff, and they may fuse together. This results in a narrowed valve opening and reduced blood flow through the valve.

Treatment for mitral valve disease depends on the severity of the condition. Several surgical procedures exist to repair or replace mitral valves, including open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart surgery.

More About Treatment

MITRAL VALVE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT?

MITRAL VALVE REPAIR

Mitral valve repair surgery may include patching holes in a valve, reconnecting valve leaflets, removing excess valve tissue so that the leaflets can close tightly, replacing cords that support the valve to repair the structural support, and separating valve leaflets that have fused.

Surgeons often tighten or reinforce the ring around the valve (annulus) in a procedure called an annuloplasty. Doctors may perform certain mitral valve repair procedures using a long, thin tube (catheter) and clips or other devices.

MITRAL VALVE REPLACEMENT

If your mitral valve can't be repaired, the doctor may recommend mitral valve replacement. In this procedure, the affected mitral valve is removed and replaces it with a mechanical valve or a valve made from cow, pig or human heart tissue (biological tissue valve). Biological tissue valves often eventually need to be replaced, as they degenerate over time. If you have a mechanical valve, you'll need to take blood-thinning medications for the rest of your life to prevent blood clots.

FAQ's

How Soon After Surgery Can I Expect Results?

Results vary from person to person. Some experience relief from symptoms right away, however, it may take longer to notice a change in some person.

How Soon After Surgery Can I Resume Normal Activities?

Recovery time depends on various different things such as the age of the patient, severity of the condition and physical condition. Typically, recovery takes at least eight weeks to 12 weeks. Some patients recover faster, others take longer.

How Long Will My Heart Valve Last?

Mechanical valves in some patients last as long as 25 years without any problems where tissue valves in some patients lasts as long as 15 years without problems.

What Are The Differences Between Mechanical Valves And Tissue Valves?

A mechanical valve has a longer lifetime than a tissue valve but again that comes with the disadvantage of being on blood-thinning medication for the rest of the life to reduce the risk of blood clots. The main advantage of a tissue valve is that it does not typically require life-long blood-thinning medication.

How Soon After Surgery Can I Resume Normal Activity?

Recovery time mainly depends upon the overall physical condition before surgery. The recovery usually takes at least eight weeks to 12 weeks. Some patients recover faster whereas others take longer.
