Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy

The immune system is composed of WBCs, tissues, and organs. The immune system functions as such to defend the body against infections and other diseases. Immunotherapy fights cancer by enabling the immune system to fight cancer cells. It is also considered as a mode of biological therapy where the substances used are from living organisms that help to treat cancer.

More About Treatment

Types of Immunotherapy

  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors: There are certain checkpoints within the immune system that prevents them from being strongly responsive. These inhibitors block the function of the checkpoints by allowing them to strongly respond to cancer cells
  • T-cell transfer therapy: This is also sometimes referred to as adoptive immunotherapy. Here the ability of T Cells is enhanced to fight cancer. In this process, generally, cells that pose to be active against cancer are selected and grown in larger batched to better attack the cancer cells and hence inserted back into the body through a needle in the vein.
  • Monoclonal antibodies: More primarily called therapeutic antibodies. Here, proteins are developed in the lab which is then made to bind to target points of the cancer cells, which makes it easier for the immune system to identify and destroy them.

How Immunotherapy is administered?

  • Intravenous (IV):  The immunotherapy is administered into the veins of the patient.
  • Oral: Patients are provided with pills that need to be swallowed.
  • Topical: Here, the prime content comes in the form of cream, which needs to be rubbed into the skin.
  • Intravesical: The immunotherapy is administered into the bladder of the patient.

FAQ's

What is Immunotherapy?

Cancer immunotherapy is more like biologic therapy and includes checkpoint blockades, cancer vaccines, T cell transfer and other immune-modulating drugs such as cytokines and other adjuvant therapies. This is used in conjunction with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

How does immunotherapy work?

Cancer is capable of hiding from the immune system and also supports tumor growth with the help of it. Here, immunotherapy is used to wake up the immune system so that it recognizes cancer and attacks the disease—just as it does with most bacteria or viruses.

How effective is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy therapy is not yet available for all types of cancer but wherever it is applicable, they are effective only for a percentage of patients.
