Spine Fusion Surgery

Spine Fusion Surgery

Spinal fusion surgery is a surgical procedure to permanently connect two or more vertebrae in the spine thus eliminating motion between them. Spinal fusion involves techniques that are designed to replicate the normal healing process of broken bones.

During spinal fusion, an artificial bone or a bonelike material is placed within the space between two spinal vertebrae. Metal plates, screws, and rods may be used to hold the vertebrae together, so that they can heal into one solid unit.

More About Treatment

What Makes You Eligible For Spine Fusion Surgery?

  • Deformities of the spine: Spinal fusion can help correct spinal deformities, such as a sideways curvature of the spine scoliosis or narrowing of the spinal canal referred to as Spinal stenosis.
  • Spinal weakness or instability: The spine may become unstable if there's abnormal or excessive motion between two vertebrae. It is a resultant side effect of severe arthritis in the spine. Spinal fusion can be used to restore spinal stability in such cases.
  •  Herniated disk: Spinal fusion may be used to stabilize the spine after removal of a damaged herniated disk.

After surgery, the patient may have to remain in the hospital for several days. It generally depends on many things like the general fitness level and any other associated medical conditions. Some people stay for 4 days before getting discharged and some may need to stay for a week.

FAQ's

When do I need a spinal fusion?

The decision to perform a fusion surgery for patients with disc disease is complex and depends upon the shape of the spine, the nature of disc disease, and the symptoms.

When is it commonly performed?

Fusions are commonly performed and are extremely useful in patients with significant loss of disc space height, deformity of their spine coupled with significant pain.

What effect does a fusion have on the rest of the spine?

This depends on where the spine is fused and how many levels are involved. In the low back, your lower back is responsible for a third of the flexibility to bend forwards, the rest is divided between the hips and hamstring flexibility. When bones fuse together at one or more levels, some stress of motion will be transferred to adjacent spinal levels.

Will fusion surgery lessen my neck mobility?

A one-level, anterior cervical fusion will not lessen the mobility, especially if you already have degeneration in that disc, so you will likely not notice any significantly decreased movement after surgery. In the neck, most of the nodding and turning of the head occur at the uppermost cervical levels which are rarely involved in cervical fusion operations.
