Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a condition of a hole in the heart and is a common heart defect that is present at birth and is referred to as congenital. The hole or the defect that occurs in the wall or septum separates the heart's ventricles or the lower chambers and allows blood to pass from the left to the right side of the heart. The oxygen-rich blood then gets pumped back to the lungs instead of out to the body, causing the heart to work harder.

Congenital heart defects may happen from problems early in the heart's development, but apart from that genetics and environmental factors may play a role. VSDs can occur alone or with other congenital heart defects.

SYMPTOMS OF VSD

Signs and symptoms of serious heart defects generally appear during the first few days, weeks or months of a child's life. Ventricular septal defect (VSD) symptoms in a baby may include:

  • Poor eating, failure to thrive
  • Fast breathing or breathlessness
  • Easy tiring

More About Treatment

PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE FROM VSD

If ventricular septal defect treatment is not done a small ventricular septal defect may not be of much worry but medium or large defects can cause a range of associated medical conditions that may range from mild to life-threatening, such as:

  • Heart failure: In a heart with a medium or large VSD, the heart needs to work harder to pump sufficient blood to the body. Thus, heart failure can develop if medium to large VSDs are not treated at the earliest
  • Pulmonary hypertension: Increased blood flow to the lungs due to the VSD causes high blood pressure in the lung arteries, a condition generally referred to as pulmonary hypertension, which can permanently damage them. This complication can cause a reversal of blood flow through the hole also called as “Eisenmenger Syndrome”.
  • Endocarditis: This heart infection is an infection of the endocardium, which is the inner lining of your heart chambers and heart valves.

FAQ's

What Causes Ventricular Septal Defect or VSD?

A ventricular septal defect happens mainly during pregnancy if the wall that forms between the two ventricles do not develop fully, thus creating a hole.

How is VSD Diagnosed?

A ventricular septal defect usually is diagnosed after a baby is born. If the hole is small, it usually will close on its own and the baby might not show any signs of the defect.

How VSD is treated?

Treatments for a ventricular septal defect depend upon the size of the hole as many ventricular septal defects are small and close on their own however, if the hole is large, surgical intervention may be required.

Can a Healthy Diet prevent VSD?

Since VSD is usually a developmental problem, it cannot be prevented by a heart-healthy diet.

How do you Prevent Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)?

Since ventricular septal defect often has a genetic basis thus getting genetic counseling may help to prevent VSD in some babies. Also, diseases affecting the mother such as diabetes or hypertension, and avoiding smoking or alcohol intake during pregnancy may help to prevent VSD to some extent.
