Appendectomy

Appendectomy

An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix and is a common emergency surgery which is performed to treat appendicitis that is an inflammatory condition of the appendix.

The appendix is a small, tube-shaped pouch that is attached to the large intestine and is located on the lower right side of the abdomen. The exact purpose of the appendix is still not known. When bacteria affect and multiply inside the organ it leads to the formation of pus causing the appendix to become swollen. This buildup of bacteria and pus can cause pain around the belly which gradually spreads to the lower right section of the abdomen and the pain is persistent and often gets worse.

It is important to note here that the body can still function properly even without an appendix.

Symptoms of Appendicitis:

  • Sudden stomach pain near the belly spreading to the lower right side of the abdomen
  • Swelling of the abdomen
  • Rigid abdominal muscles
  • The occurrence of constipation or diarrhea
  • A feeling of nausea or vomiting
  • Consistence loss of appetite
  • Low-grade fever

More About Treatment

Types of Appendectomy

There are generally two types of appendectomy:

  • Open Appendectomy: During an open appendectomy, an incision is made in the lower right side of the abdomen and the appendix is removed and the wound is closed with stitches. This is done in cases when the appendix has burst or ruptured and if the infection has spread to other organs. It is also the preferred option for people who have had abdominal surgery in the past.
  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy: During a laparoscopic appendectomy, the appendix is accessed through a few smaller incisions in the abdomen. A small, narrow tube called a cannula is then inserted which is used to inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. Once the abdomen is inflated, a laparoscope is inserted through the incision which is a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front. Once the appendix is found, it will be tied off with stitches and removed. The small incisions are then cleaned, closed, and dressed.
